If I order a copy of my free credit report from the government’s website, does that negatively affect my credit rating AT ALL? I’m in the process of buying a condo and I don’t want to do ANYTHING that will bring my rating down, but I do want to check my score.
No it will not affect your score, but you will have to pay a fee to each CRA for your credit score.
What will affect your credit score is when the mortgage broker pulls your credit report (known as a hard hit). When it comes time to find the financing, you must do it within 14 days, under FICO, they treat inquiries for the same type of loan as only one inquiry as long as you do so within 14 days.
Also, those companies that check your credit report to make offers of pre-approved credit do not affect your score and also employers who check a persons credit report do not affect ones score.

I just got a new job in finance, I have to learn how to read Credit Reports to decide on loans. I understand some things on a credit report, but I would like to find a website that breaks them down for you…..any ideas?

I am currently using my GI Bill education benefits and I got a Stafford government loan as well. My question is this: does a Stafford government loan, which requires no credit check, go on your credit report and affect it positively or negatively?
It shows up on your credit report as outstanding credit, meaning its something that you owe money on. as to whether or not its a positive or negative, I think its pretty neutral until you start paying it back, as far as your credit score goes. BUT, when your credit is being evaluated for something, chances are whoever is checking it is also looking at your debt to income ratio. In this way it can negatively affect your ability to get a loan for something because it increases your total amount of debt.
If you dont pay it back when you’re supposed to it will negatively affect your credit report, and if you do pay it back like you’re supposed to, it will be a positive. Also, if you don’t pay it back the government can garnish it from your wages and withhold your income tax returns until you’re caught up.
I have searched online for a free credit report, but have not found an actually free detailed report. The reason I ask is I messed up in initially paying back my student loans, and I know it has affected my credit rating, but not sure to what degree. I was apporved to lease a car, get a cell phone, but declined for a credit card, so I would like to know why.
